The Problem with Traditional Training Programs

Learning and development leaders have been facing the truth for: Traditional training does not hit the mark.

Research cited in the Harvard Business Review concludes that learning does not lead to better organizational performance because people soon revert to their old ways of doing things. Various impact evaluation studies have also proved that only about 20% of training ‘sticks’ in improved job performance while the balance 80% is wasted.

For too long L&D has focused on developing methods and techniques to improve the learning situation, but what about the “doing” situation – the performance environment? After a traditional training participants are left to fend for themselves, but when they are supported more frequently there is a big difference in driving desired business outcomes.

Introducing the High Performance Learning Journey (HPLJ)

The High Performance Learning Journey ® (HPLJ) approach has been proven to dramatically increase the impact of training on workplace performance.

With the HPLJ, the focus shifts from just learning to doing. In practical terms, it means application of the HPLJ framework to design the learning journey in terms of understanding the business objectives, training outcomes, gaining commitment from the participants as well as their supervisors, delivering the necessary content through a variety of means including classroom sessions, e-learning, micro learning and virtual learning programs. Finally there is a link to on the job performance through tasks, projects and post workshop workbooks that cement the learning and allows the participants to apply what they learned to their jobs.
